IMPROVISED DANCE

LET THE BODY SPEAK - UNLEASH YOURSELF

Dance Improvisation

Improvisation: The activity of making or doing something that is not planned in advance, using whatever can be found. The origin of the word itself comes from the Latin “improvisationus”, which literally means unforeseen.

Dance: Dance is a living art form. It is an ephemeral mode of expression made up of sequences of body movements in space often accompanied by music.

Improvised dance

Art of instant creation, improvisation in dance bring us face to face with the unknown, providing new states of physical, emotional and mental consciousness, helping to develop our own movement and our identity. A portal to access another part of ourselves, through the unexpected.

... As pleasure of the moment and the unexpected

It is directly linked to the desire to channel the vitality of the movement, which only asks to be expressed, in particular thanks to the music offered. It is at the same time a cathartic, free, autonomous, instinctive practice, a form in itself.

...As a basis for the dancer's practice

It is the very birth of movement, of the relationship to the body, to meaning, to space and to musicality. A powerful educational tool that allows each individual to position themselves as the creator, director and performer of their dance. The status of the "professor or teacher" is then much more a position of facilitator of a non-competitive framework and environment, allowing everyone to open up their own possibilities.

As direct access to creation

Improvisation is also designed as a powerful compositional tool. It then consists of identifying, selecting and orienting elements seen in the improvisation, as a pillar and framework for future creation. A time where we will be able to explore and deepen these forms and sensations, appropriate them and extract their meaning. The choreographer is first and foremost a spectator and co-creator of the work, of what is happening. A creation based on listening, letting things happen, observation and translation.

.... As a basis for the re-presentation

An immediate bringing into play of bodies, in relation to the action in its direct environment: to the stage, to the audience, to objects, to the music, to the senses. An action of instinct and of the moment made possible by the responsibility that the choreographer leaves to the performer. In this artistic posture, dancers, choreographer and spectators create together, and constantly, the meaning of what is happening.

"Before a child speaks, he sings. Before they write, they draw. As soon as they stand, they dance. Art is the basis of human expression." Phylicia Rashad

Benefits of Improvisation

Dance improvisation allows us to:

As a dancing body:

  • Develop self-awareness by exploring the body in movement.

  • Discover your own style, expression and perspective as a performing artist.

  • Express your color palette, through a mood, an emotion, a character or a story

  • Develop the capacity to listen our inspiration through musicality and musical expression.

  • Become autonomous in your choices, by learning to trust your own instinct as a dancer and performer.

  • Free yourself from the expectation of perfection, allow yourself to (re)find joy and greater self-esteem through movement.

As an individual :

  • Decide and make personal in the moment.

  • Lead with confidence, authenticity and vulnerability.

  • Free yourself from the gaze of others and external validation.

  • Learn to recover from mistakes and manage doubt or uncertainty.

  • Experience meaningful self-expression and radical emotional release.

  • Develop your self-confidence by naturally feeling more comfortable evolving in your own way.
